This 4-day round-trip desert tour from Fes offers more time to enjoy both Todra Gorge and the Merzouga region. Cross the Middle Atlas Mountains, visit the cedar forests near Azrou and travel through the changing landscapes of southeastern Morocco. Spend time walking through Todra Gorge before continuing to Merzouga. A full desert-exploration day introduces you to Rissani, traditional Saharan communities, Khamlia’s music and the landscapes surrounding Erg Chebbi. The experience concludes with a sunset camel trek and a night in a desert camp before returning to Fes through the Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas Mountains.

Your Itinerary

1. Day 1

   Fes to Todra Gorge

   Depart from Fes and travel toward Ifrane before continuing through the Middle Atlas Mountains and the cedar forests near Azrou. After observing the forest landscapes and possibly seeing Barbary macaques, continue through Berber villages and mountain scenery to Midelt for lunch. Travel south toward Tinghir and arrive near Todra Gorge in the late afternoon. Enjoy the sunset, dinner and an overnight stay in a scenic hotel surrounded by mountains and valleys.

2. Day 2

   Todra Gorge to Merzouga

   After breakfast, spend the morning exploring Todra Gorge on foot. Walk beside the river and beneath the canyon’s impressive cliffs. Continue through Tinjdad, Jorf and Erfoud toward Merzouga, passing desert towns, palm groves and arid landscapes. Arrive before sunset and settle into a kasbah or hotel at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Dinner and overnight stay in Merzouga.

3. Day 3

   Merzouga Desert Exploration and Erg Chebbi Camp

   After breakfast, begin a full-day exploration of the Merzouga region. Visit Rissani and discover its historic atmosphere, traditional souk and local architecture. Depending on the market schedule, explore the stalls and try Medfouna, the region’s famous stuffed flatbread. Continue to Khamlia to experience traditional Saharan and Gnawa music. Explore the desert surroundings, seasonal lake and oasis before returning to Merzouga. In the afternoon, meet your camel guide and ride across the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset. Reach the desert camp for mint tea, dinner, music around the campfire and an overnight stay beneath the stars.

4. Day 4

   Merzouga to Fes

   Wake early for sunrise over the dunes and enjoy breakfast at the camp. Return from the desert and begin the journey to Fes through the Ziz Valley, Midelt and the Middle Atlas Mountains. Stop for photographs, rest and lunch along the way before arriving in Fes in the late afternoon or evening.
